35 years to grow, less than 35 minutes to go

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Saturday, September 12th, 2009

I love the big trees shading and surrounding our home. We feel very lucky to live in an older well-established neighborhood because there are some beautiful mature trees all around us. Like this one:

But what happens when a tree this size starts to die and drop things like this smack dab in the middle between our driveway (which means…..gasp!!…….. my new van!) and our neighbors?

So not good.

Especially since it sort of leans toward our house.

Here’s the problem:

It had apparently been struck by lightening quite a while ago, and it was dying a slow death. We had a tree man come look at it and he said the damage was approximately 60% of the way through the base, so it is just a matter of time before it falls on our house. Needless to say, since he said that, here’s where I’ve been parking:

So on Friday, we took the plunge. Well, actually, the tree took the plunge:

It made me tear up to watch it being cut down.

I wasn’t expecting that to happen…. but it did.

Amazing how fast a big beautiful tree comes down.

So until they can return on Monday to finish it, the weight is off. The danger is gone.

And this big mess is left for now.

(Looks like a thumb sticking up, huh?)

But… at least I can park in the driveway again. :)

We had a tree at our old house that we had to take down. We left the stump as tall as your is now and had Tom’s uncle carve it. It was beautiful. If I can find a picture I will send it to you.

Do you have a fireplace? That would be a good way to recycle the poor tree. I am glad that you got it taken care of, though.

A neighbor of ours left a stump almost that large and shaped and painted a large lighthouse in their yard! Very cute for a lake home! I hate having to lose those huge mature trees, but sometimes they have to go.. all ours are 40-50 years old or more, and we’ll have to take some down before too long! Sorry you had to, too..

Oh my goodness, if I only knew someone that could CARVE!! I’d figure out something cool and unique to do with it. Mr. Lucky would probably think I’ve gone off the deep end though! lol
