A Movie a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009
As you know, I arrived in the great big state of Texas on Wednesday. Shannon and I had talked for weeks on end about *what will we do?* while I’m in town. We made NO plans (easy for me – quite challenging for Shannon, probably. She’s the planner and I am the fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants girl). We just wanted to have fun, lots of laughs, and maybe catch a movie or two.
We’re up to FOUR now.
Wednesday we saw “He’s just not that into you” with a huge cast of well-known actors, including Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper and Justin Long – to name a few. It was a cute modern day look at dating with all the modern technologies we use to stay in touch these days.
Thursday we saw “New In Town” with Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. It was actually better than I expected. That sounds ugly – but in all honesty, I’m not a huge Renee Zellweger fan. I don’t know what it is… just don’t usually love her movies. But now…. Harry Connick, Jr. is another story! He’s a doll and after he stole my heart in “Hope Floats” over a decade ago as the darling Justin Matisse, and then reconfirmed my love for him last year as Daniel in “P.S. I Love You”.
Friday we saw “Confessions of a Shopaholic” with Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. Based on the book of the same title by author Sophie Kinsella – which is one in a series about Becky Bloomwood, shopper extraordinaire. I’ve read all the books in the series with delight – they are extremely witty and humorous. I LOVE the books…. the movie didn’t pull it off quite as well as I’d hoped, but it was ok. I think after nearly a half-dozen books reading and laughing my way through Becky’s antics – I was just geared for MORE. Or something. It was good, just not great.
Saturday we saw “Gran Torino” with Clint Eastwood. (Seems silly to link Clint Eastwood to his IMDb page because WHO does not know him? But, it seemed only fair since I’d linked everyone else.) All I can say is … WOW. I mean, really…. WOW. The language was horrible but necessary for accuracy, I suppose. It was a fantastic movie – and I cried. Seriously boohoo’ed at the end. It was by far my favorite of all the ones that we’ve seen.

Jenon 22 Feb 2009 at 7:01 am 1I am glad you girls are having lots of time to play! I heard Gran Torino was a great flick from someone I work with!
Stacyon 22 Feb 2009 at 7:41 am 2I am not a big fan of Clint Eastwood at all, but my hubby is. For his birthday I took him to see Gran Torino. I have the same reaction as you. I Loved It! I laughed and cried through it all and at the end I bawled like a baby. Hubby naturally made fun of me for crying, but I think he felt the same way.
Thanks for the update on the movies. I have read the Shopaholic series as well asn was looking forward to the movie, perhaps I will skip this one.
Have fun on the rest of your trip. Can’t wait to hear all about it when you get home.
Beeboon 22 Feb 2009 at 8:18 am 3Hope that you guys can squeeze in one more movie before you have to leave.
Doryon 22 Feb 2009 at 8:30 am 4@Jen – Thanks! We have had a great time.
@Stacy – You should see it anyway… it was worth the watch, just a little different than expected.
@Beebo – Thanks honey, I hope so too.
Beccaon 22 Feb 2009 at 11:22 am 5I haven’t been to the movies in a long time, talk about recommendations! Thanks!
Thotladyon 23 Feb 2009 at 3:45 pm 6I wouldn’t want to see Gran Torino if Clint Eastwood dies at the end. I will not willingly see a movie where the lead character dies. I have enough sadness to deal with.
It looked like a good movie from the previews, but I was too afraid of the ending…so, no go.
I wanted to go see Marley and Me when it came out, but once again, death at the end, especially a dog dying…I just can’t handle it. My husband bought me the book a year ago Christmas…it is sitting unopened on our book shelf. I said to him…did you really think I would read it knowing the ending? He just shook his head and walked away.
