African Violets

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Some time earlier this year, my sister Lena and I were at Lowe’s for something or the other and ran across African Violets on clearance. We both got two of them, just for the heck of it.

Now, we all know I am the black thumb of death when it comes to houseplants. I wasn’t always this way, I used to be pretty good with them but nowadays, I can’t seem to make any of them live. (Actually, now that I think of it…. in previous years I’d take them to my Dad when they started getting all puny-looking and he’d work his magic green thumb on them, sending them back to me all healthy and beautiful. And then, usually within a few months they’d start gasping for breath again. Hmmmm. Guess I probably wasn’t every really good with them – they just loved Daddy.)

Anyway, I’ve been very careful with these – because I’ve always heard that African Violets can be difficult. So far, so good. And…… will wonders never cease?? One of them is even BLOOMING!!! (Now? In the cold? What is up with that?)

I do well with African violets…just a note, they like to be watered from the bottom. And, if you use African violet food in the water, they will bloom and bloom and bloom! :o )
