Ants in your pants

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Someone tell me what is the deal with all the ants this summer? Is anyone else finding an overabundance of ants every where you turn or is it just me?

It all started a few months ago with a straggler here or there, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, on the back deck (which is outside so I can’t complain about that too much). I’d kill them and not think anything of it. Then one day there was a whole entourage near the back door – I dug out some ant-killing spray and treated the door frame outside and killed the little army inside.

Then one day a few weeks ago, we were at my husbands new physical therapy clinic that they just finished and moved into when we found ants crawling on the newly tiled foyer floor. Sheesh.

This past weekend when we were driving home from Texas, Luby or Beebo saw an ant inside the van. Inside the van ?? One ant turned into two or three, and so on and so on. We were talking about it as we drove, both of us remembering seeing a big swarming pile of them inside the parking garage at the hotel in San Antonio near where the van was parked. Finally, after seeing several, we pulled off an exit to investigate. Mr. Lucky opened the back end of the van and tapped on the luggage rack bar on top of the van and a gazillion little teeny Texas ants poured out. Ewwwww. We found a bunch more inside under the floor mats. Blecht.

Yesterday when I got home from work, there was another small army of ants in the kitchen window and a few near the sink.

What is the deal?? I know I’m not the greatest housekeeper in the world but come on – it’s not THAT bad. We’ve had a ton of rain this year, I don’t know if that is contributing or what. That wouldn’t explain the ones in the van though. I’ve heard several people here mention them too so maybe it’s just in this area.

I bought some Ant Block – has anyone tried it? We’ll see what happens…

Speaking of bugs, wouldn’t you just love to have this paperweight sitting on your desk?

Or maybe this one:

I didn’t even get a picture of the Scorpion Suckers we saw all over the place in Texas but I found them online. **Shiver**

Echh! I know you have pets in the house so I don’t know if you can use this but here I’ve used a product called Terro. You put a small drop on cardboard and the ants flock to it. Icky, but they take it back to the hill and are never seen again! Good luck! What is it about crawling bugs that it just makes us feel dirty?

Here it is flies….it seems they are everywhere…and there is nothing worse then one buzzing around while your trying to sleep….LOL….

@Vonnie – I don’t know but I’ll check it out. That Ant Block stuff that I got said the same thing – it’s almost like a food to the ants, they’re attracted to it and take it back to the hill.

@Barbara – Ewww. I think I’d rather have ants than flies. I know where those flies landed last.

Okay I might be a little sadistic, but there is this ant pile right in front of my little bench in my flower garden and every day when I sit to drink my tea, I watch it get bigger and bigger and bigger. Last night it was pretty big and it looked like they were preparing for WWIII they were so busy moving about that I thought enough already! Couldn’t find anykind of bug spray in the garage but I did find some WD40 and a lighter. Do I need to explain more?

    Ick!
The rain probaly has a lot to do with it- their colonies are below ground & filled with water, so they’re heading for high ground. The ones in TX? That’s just how they are- ubiquitous & persistant :-(

    @Kat – Ummm. No…. I get the picture. It wasn’t pretty, either. ;)

@Meg – I understand but…. does their “high ground” have to be INSIDE the house?

We had a few ants early in the season, but none lately. I hate bugs. I am so not a bug girl. Ugh.

I have some ant terro if you would like some call me! When we put mulch out last year, our house was full of them. Used Terro and an exterminator!

2 yrs ago when I moved into the apt I noticed an ant problem. I went to Target and got the ant traps, some kind of perimeter spray, and some stuff that looked like coffee grounds. Haven’t seen any ants since inside my apt and this is my 3rd summer here! I think the combo of all the “toxic” stuff I bought did the trick….
