At what age… ?

I’m wondering….
At what age is it appropriate to let your daughter wear acrylic fingernails, that have to be *filled in* and redone what? weekly or every 10 days or so? (I’ve never had them so I’m really not sure how much maintenance is involved, but I know there is SOME.)

Stacyon 10 Dec 2008 at 6:50 am 1I have no idea what age is appropriate, but I do know they can get pretty expensive. You have to have them filled every 2-3 weeks depending on their rate of growth. Around here it would run me about $50/mo for the upkeep.
If I had a daughter and she was asking for them for a special occasion I would probably do it after age 12. If she wanted to keep them she would need to be old enough to get a job to pay for the upkeep. lol
Good luck!
Kellyon 10 Dec 2008 at 7:15 am 2This kind of thing is why I’m happy I have a boy. I think I agree with Stacy. I would make my daughter wait until she could pay for them herself, unless it’s for a party or pageant or something. I would be worried about the risk of infection too. I sound like a mean mama don’t I? lol
Jenon 10 Dec 2008 at 7:56 am 3Yikes. I don’t think anyone should wear them as long as the ones photographed here! Although the french mani style looks better than long red ones.
Appropriate age? When she can pay for them herself. I would be a mean mama too.
Shannonon 10 Dec 2008 at 7:56 am 4I have them and I know Madison would love them but I’ve told her she needs to be high school for me to even consider it plus she would have to contribute to their upkeep. Why do you ask?

Katon 10 Dec 2008 at 10:39 am 6I don’t have girls but when I see young girls with fake nails I think that it looks pretentious. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know.
I do have them myself but I think it is a real pain to spend the time every couple of weeks to get them filled. I take them on and off depending on how tired I get of sitting there and dealing with it. Around here the first set would be about $30 and a fill is anywhere from $15-20, so depending on fast your nail grows you are looking at least $40 per month to keep it up. I agree with Shannon, high school seems appropriate, IF she can pay for them herself.
Beccaon 10 Dec 2008 at 11:52 am 7Oh heavens am I the only one who doesn’t do that for myself? I think that in this economy, that is just money I am not willing to spend.
I am sorry, but you have fingernails, learn to do a manicure for yourself. If she really wants the fake stuff, she should have to pay for it, 100%. I would say high school.
giggleson 10 Dec 2008 at 12:39 pm 8My daughter S has gel on her nails. I used to do it but got tired of the upkeep. To me this is a little bit better cause they put it on your real nails, like polish and it just makes them stronger but lets them grow longer, harder to break them. But, that said, S was in high school and was working and paid for them all by herself. All I did was go with her to make sure the place seemed clean and safe. Good luck

Guinieon 10 Dec 2008 at 12:57 pm 9I agree with everyone else. When she’s old enough to pay for it herself. Aravis occasionally buy the press on ones. They make them much better than they used to and she wore one set for about 4 days before one popped off.
I tend to agree with Becca on this one too. I do not do this for myself and can’t justify the expense. It’s definitely a luxury. I know several women who DO do it, though. But for a girl still living at home, she should at least be high school and old enough to pay for it all herself.
megon 10 Dec 2008 at 4:00 pm 10Oh, good~ I was afraid I was going to be the Wicked Witch-of-a-Mother West by saying “when she has a job & can pay for them herself
)
I’m another cheap-o who doesn’t spend money on that sort of thing- mostly ’cause I don’t need to, with my rhino-hide nails, plus long nails would bug the heck out of me since I’m on a computer all day- but I will occasionally have a mani-pedi for a special treat (& it’s been 1 1/2 yrs since the last one
Jeanon 10 Dec 2008 at 4:39 pm 11I agree.. high school.. at least 15 or 16. Then she’d have to pay the upkeep, at least.. When I did have them, it was $50 for them being put on, but only $10 for a manicure with a little fill in..And the French look is the ONLY one for young girls, other than light pink.. and they should be the shorter length.. I liked them, but they sure do get in the way!
hugs,
Jean
Muffyon 10 Dec 2008 at 6:00 pm 12They are pain to maintain! And get pretty expensive. I’d say as long as she pays for them – and keeps them a decent length – high school sems to be old enough.
Anndawgon 10 Dec 2008 at 10:20 pm 13Uh Hello, I just took them off my nails. Look at my nails tomorrow and we will have a discussion on this! I say never!
Thotladyon 11 Dec 2008 at 1:02 pm 14When she can pay for the upkeep herself, then I say…go for it!
Me personally, I don’t do it, because it is too expensive. I am very frugal.
