Bleeding Hearts

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Flowers amaze me. They are so colorful, beautiful, and yet, simple. Some of God’s handiwork at its finest. I would love to think I have a green thumb but ……. I really don’t. I use to try really hard but have sort of given up on it – except for a few pots on the porch. My sister, Lina, has a green thumb though. As did my dad – he could make anything grow. Their yard had become more flower bed than grass over the years.

I remember several years ago when my sister came for the weekend with a few big pots of hostas my dad had sent over to me. As we dug holes in my yard, we talked about how clay-like the soil here is, compared to the rich black soil that came from my parents yard. The worms in my yard were scrawny and pale in color, while the worms that were in the soil around the hostas were big and fat, dark in color… almost like night crawlers.

Later when we recounted the difference in our soil to Daddy, he got so tickled picturing my pathetic looking, malnourished worms compared to his fat and happy ones. I can see him laughing about it in my mind, like it was yesterday.

I still can’t quite believe he’s gone.

I am so jealous! Blooming flowers…I don’t know if spring will ever come here! We have a 60% chance of snow tomorrow night!

The memories we carry are truely bittersweet aren’t they?

Your flowers are beautiful. I have clay soil here in my yard too. I dug a garden patch the year we moved in and put a lot of peat and store bought compost into the soil. Now, my garden patch soil turns over easily and is rich for growing plants. My neighbor across the road says it takes years to “condition” clay soil. I want to expand my garden spot, but thinking of all the work involved makes me put it off. Someday, I will…

And I can only imagine how your heart bleeds… I am terrified to someday hear the news that my daddy is gone. :( It will happen, someday, and I know I can never prepare myself. I will miss him like you miss yours. My heart aches for you.
