Camping for beginners

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

There is definitely something that borders on awesome to find yourself in the quiet of nature, with nothing but chirping crickets and tree frogs making noise and the bright star-lit sky overhead.

It’s the hours of preparing (finding your camping gear from years gone by, purchasing new camping gear to replace the lost items or the unusable ones, and then loading the vehicle with ALL that stuff that is really a pain in the rump. Not to mention arriving at the campsite and having to then unload and set up.

It’s a LOT of work.

Really.

But, there was a moment Saturday evening, sitting by the campfire with our dinner cooking that my darling husband took my hand and said, “Honey, I know this isn’t your cup of tea…. but I love it. Thank you,” that made it all worthwhile.

Now that we have all the stuff we need – in one place! – I’m going to get some plastic totes to store it in so next time won’t be nearly as difficult. (Did you hear that? I said, next time!)

We were with Mr. Lucky’s brother and his wife and their two kids. They have a big ole’ 3 room tent, so our daughters stayed in one room of it with our niece while their son was in the opposite end with the adults in the middle section. (I can’t believe I didn’t get a picture of the tents! duh, don’t know how I forgot that.) Which means Mr. Lucky and I had our tent all to ourselves (woohoo)! They brought their dogs with them also, who are seasoned campers and very well behaved. We ended up boarding our two dogs because we were afraid it would be too much for both of our dogs and our girls to be first-timers. We’ll take them next time though.

This is Nakota.

This is Sophie.

This is Mr. Lucky making pancakes! :) He is not just a pretty face, you know. He’s useful too.

This was part of Mr. Lucky’s Christmas gift from my sweet friend Shannon – a brand with an M on it, for our last name. It got a major work-out this weekend as we tried it out on everything we could.

Luby had to try her hand at flipping the pancakes.

My sister-in-law scrambling eggs on the Coleman stove.

(You notice all these hard workers while I’m just snapping photos?)

I did make myself some coffee though. Does that count?? :P

Sweeeeeeeeet!

It was a gorgeous day. After such a plentiful breakfast, the troops went fishing. The path to the lake was laden with poison ivy and oak, to which I am very VERY sensitive. So I held down the fort at the campsite for a few hours by myself. I had planned to read a book.

But I found something even better to do.

Shhh, don’t tell. It’s our little secret! :D

I used to love camping! Nowadays, it’s kind of difficult.. I camp at places like Marriott!! I’m glad you had some fun, and even more glad he was grateful you did it! They really do make their existance worthwhile every so often, don’t they?
    Hugs,

So glad it went well for everyone. I feel so relaxed when we go camping. Hope the good out weighed all the work.

I love camping so long as I am staying in a camper. Hubby’s mom has a nice camper set up in a quiet, off the beaten path park that we go to several weekends through out the summer. Love it!

speaking of books, did you start Wednesday Letters yet? Can’t wait until you read it.

Love camping. Yes, the packing and prep are a pain in the rump.

Our family of 5 is going this weekend. I love it that the kids NEVER say “Can we watch TV,” “Can I play on the computer,” or “Can I play Wii.” Another phrase I NEVER hear is “I’m bored!”

We always have pancakes and sausage for breakfast at least one morning. It’s all the more fun that we are camping with two other great families!

just what I needed. I’ve been packing all week for our camping/float trip this weekend. Now, I’m so ready to go. I am proud to say that my hubby handles breakfast, too. Isn’t it wonderful?
