Cellular evolution

This is a frequent topic of conversation around here. The girls want to know what this was like when we were young or what that was like…. inquisitive little minds that they are. And as you know … times are a’changing in this world of ours. Having cellular service every where you go and the ability to be linked to the world via internet is rapidly becoming standard practice. My young daughters know nothing BUT this…. they find it hard to believe that we didn’t GROW UP with a cell phone stuffed in our pockets, like some of the kids they know at school. (Wait. Not MY kids. Other kids at school. I am sooo not ready for the girls to have their own phones. Yikes. *shudder*)
So when the conversation rolled around to when we had our first cell phones and what it looked like - they were amazed (and so was I, actually) that I found the old thing lurking in the garage. (We’ve moved at least 3 times since we actually used this phone. Do NOT ask me why I still have it. Seriously. I do NOT even know.) You should have heard them laughing when they laid eyes on it… a Motorola bag phone, circa 1996.
Lordy wasn’t it HUGE? (Can you see that dog hair stuck to the bag flap? Yeah, isn’t that the story of my life? Some things never change.) Even with that antenna raised, it dropped the call about every 5 seconds and was generally more trouble then it was worth. My hubby got it for me when I was expecting Beebo and commuting each day to college - which is the only reason I remember the year I got it!
And… my! was it bulky in the hand too! Sheesh… how times have changed.
Currently, I have a Motorola Razr. Slim, sleek (read: slick - I’ve dropped it a gazillion times) and best of all: it’s PINK!
It has a camera for picture texting, which I do a LOT of the time.
I love it. Mainly because it is PINK.
Shannon used to have one just like it until she just upgraded to a different one that has a keyboard which makes texting simpler. It was fun to know that we had matching phones, even if we lived a million miles apart. Guess I’ll have to upgrade soon to one like she got huh?
Between the bag phone and the Razr… there were a few Nokias. A fat flip phone with and extending antenna (but it wasn’t it a bag so it was a huge step up!) A slimmer Nokia, with a built-in antenna that stayed in one position. Then back to Motorola - a smaller flip but no where near as thin as the Razr. It had a built in camera and the ability to go online. (If you wanted to look at everything in that dinky little screen.) I think the phones between the original bag phone and my current one have been donated to a local battered women’s shelter to be refurbished and used as needed. So, I don’t have them laying around to take pictures of them. (Gosh. Thank GOODness! You’d think I was really a pack-rat if I did, huh?)
So… do tell. What was your first cell phone?

Shannonon 18 Aug 2008 at 6:42 am 1I honestly think my first phone was the same bag phone you had! How funny is that? I remember how cool I felt using it but looking at it now- it CRACKS me up! It’s HUGE and so bulky. Can you imagine using that now?
I don’t know about you- but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my cell phone. But I should probably call it my DoryPhone because honestly I use it more to talk to and text you and send you a gazillion pictures……….than anyone. And I LOVE that!

LOL LOL LOL Oh, how I like that…. a DoryPhone… hehe
Stacyon 18 Aug 2008 at 8:53 am 2The first I remember was a fat Motorola Clamshell phone. What dorks we were. I remember the bag phones, but I don’t think we had one. I have a sony ericcson now and LOVE it! Hubby and teen have razr and tween has the same as me.
Oh my girl… that’s a lot of phones in your house! Sheesh…. I am so not ready for that just yet.
Beccaon 18 Aug 2008 at 9:39 am 3My first cell phone was a Motorola Startac. Man that was in 2000. Then I went to a Tracphone, and then a Motorola Razr and now I have a Motorola Q9h smartphone. Does it make me smart? It depends on the day and who you ask!
LOL…. I bet my husband would laugh me outta the room if I said I wanted a *smart*phone….
BBBon 18 Aug 2008 at 10:08 am 4My first two phones were Nokia’s. However, I now have…..a Pink Motorola Razr!! Who woulda thunk!! I love mine too! But, I also have a HOT PINK plastic cover on mine. So it’s even pinker (or is it more pink??). Hubby has upgraded his Blackberry and I have been seriously thinking of taking his old one which is only about a year old. It just has SO many buttons. I fear I might get confused.
Lol…. I think you could handle it girlie. (Did he keep the instruction manual?)
megon 18 Aug 2008 at 2:34 pm 5I’ve only had two cell phones- a straight Motorola (don’t remember the model) that I got in 2001, & my Samsung flip that I’ve had for nearly 4 years
4 YEARS??? Wow… mine have never lived that long!! Something about dropping them in the toilet or on the pavement one too many times…
Lindaon 18 Aug 2008 at 2:34 pm 6Cell phone? What’s a cell phone? I still use the old mount on the wall, crank until the operator comes on.
J/K

LOL… That is sooo not true because I’m pretty sure I HAVE your cell phone number!
giggleson 18 Aug 2008 at 3:21 pm 7In 1992 I had a motorola bag phone. I remember those things being so big they had to have a carrying strap on them. We got it cause we lived so far out in the sticks with 3 little kids and didn’t have a home phone. Now I have an Iphone. Hubby bought it for me last christmas. This way when we travel I can still keep up with everyones blogs. We sure have come a long long way haven’t we?
Giggles
Oh yes… we surely have! Glad to see you by… I’d been missing you!
Jenon 18 Aug 2008 at 4:49 pm 8I got my first cell phone in 2000. Not sure what kind it was, but we got it “only for emergencies.” I don’t remember talking on it - ever.
We dropped our cell plan and went without a cell phone from 2002-2005. In 2005, I got a blue LG flip phone. I was commuting an hour each way to work, so I felt like I needed it in case of car trouble. Again, I didn’t use it all that much.
Now, I have a cute little pink LG flip phone. I use it as little as possible - usually, one call a day on my home from work to say hello to Travis. I come no where close to using my minutes/texts each month!
I had a boyfriend with a bag phone back in the day… and yeah, I thought he was pretty cool & important to have one.

Yeah, we first got phones when I was pregnant and it was for *emergencies*… that rule doesn’t stick all these years later.
Guinieon 18 Aug 2008 at 9:27 pm 9I don’t remember my first phone. I’ve only had one for the last maybe 3 years…believe it or not! lol The one I have now is a blue Katana. (Blue’s my favorite color.)
Oh, and hey, I’m not on your Blogroll! Should I be offended? ;o) lol

Whoopsie Daisy! How’d that happen???? You’re there NOW. K? But… just so you know… you WERE on my Bloglines reader… which is how I’ve been doing most of my blog reading lately because I’ve been too busy for words. Does that redeem me a little?
BEKon 19 Aug 2008 at 12:54 am 10I got my first cell phone after a terrible/learning experience at age 20! I worked as a nurse tech (glorified CNA while getting my RN degree) on a 3-11 shift. I left work in a crazy rainstorm. I had only worked there a week or so before this happened so I hadn’t found more than one route to get home. The route that I knew was somewhat flooded but the car before me got through it!!!! Why shouldn’t I- WRONG!!! My wonderful, beautiful ‘88 Ford Thunderbird (that sat low to the ground) flooded it’s engines. I therefore had to step out of the car in knee deep water and run to the nearest parking lot in darkness. I ran to the emergency phone in the middle of the parking lot-no answer. I am now soaked in powder blue scrubs and running towards the hospital entrance sobbing (it’s scary in an inner-city at midnight-ish).
I get into the hospital and call my boyfriend (aka my hubby now) and my parents. My dad later confided in me that at one point on their way to get me they weren’t sure if they would make it through some of the high water even in their F150.
Needless to say I believe the next day I signed paperwork for a state-of-the art Brick (I mean cell phone).
I now have a Nokia 6301 (I just had to replace my Magenta Motorola Razor that I had for 2 years) I love my new phone!
Wow… how scary! That’s the best part of cell phones - we use them for fun all the time but the ability to call someone if you end up stranded is WONDERFUL and much needed for women especially!
Guinieon 19 Aug 2008 at 7:30 am 11Love ya, Dory! lol When I saw I wasn’t there, I was like, “Hey!” and got the giggles. Dory 1 forgot Dory 2! lol Too funny!
