I am so proud of you for taking time away from your own family to show people in another country how much you care. You are a great example to the rest of us.
And in recent years, I have been striving to live with less stuff and be more giving. I think I would be even MORE inclined to do this if I had the experience of witnessing poverty like you have in Guatemala.
One of my high school friends adopted a baby boy from a Guatemalan orphanage a few years ago. (I believe the Guatemalan government no longer allows it though. I know that her application was “grandfathered in” at the time because the law had just changed.) Maybe the laws have changed back….? I have no idea.
Anyway, she blogged about the experience and how long she waited to bring him home – there was a lot of red tape involved. He was ill and had failure to thrive – many of the pictures she received from the orphanage were of him in a hospital. She posts recent photos of him on facebook regularly and he is a healthy, ornery, little guy.
I could blather on and on, but again, I am just so proud of you and I am proud to know you. You make a difference.

Ok, I admit – I do have quite a large number but 4,000 is a slight exaggeration. By something like three thousand nine hundred and sixty. Or more. He’s a mess.
