Doing the Dory

Remember those great Mt. Dew commercials a few years ago? The ones that were wild adventures and extreme sports, prompting the Average Joe to “Do the Dew!“? It was a great ad campaign and I actually loved it. I must confess here and say I used to be a Mt. Dewaholic. My husband used to threaten to have it piped into the house instead of water - it was that bad. Come to think of it, we actually toasted to it at our wedding, that’s how much I loved it!! (In our wedding pictures, it looks like pee in the glasses. Eww - I don’t recommend you try it.) I’m over my addiction to Mt. Dew now - did the 12 step program. (hehehe) I haven’t had a single sip Mt. Dew or any other soda for over 10 years now. You’d never guess this, but I don’t even miss it anymore at all. But I’ve gotten off track ….. instead, I wanted to tell you about the voice in my head that makes me do random silly things.
Anyone who has read my blog has figured out already that sometimes I have blond moments. (Ok, ok… truth be told - sometimes, I have blond days!!) And I have a real honest-to-goodness problem with my memory. Read: relatively NO short-term memory whatsoever. It can be a problem. My girls have always known this is a problem for me and they love to make fun of me, rotten little scoundrels that they are! After *Finding Nemo* came out a few years ago (which has scenes set in a dental office - BONUS!!) they began to call me “Dory” at some of my …. ummm ….. brighter moments! Hence, the pseudo-name I use on this blog. It’s become a running joke in my life, even some of my co-workers join in the fun because they too realize I have a memory problem.
A few years ago, late one afternoon, the girls and I were headed out of my husbands’ office - which has a very long driveway. They were arguing about something as they tend to do all the darn time so I decided to shake things up a bit. The voice in my head was telling me to do something totally out of the norm that would surprise them and sort of change the mood in the car - so I decided to start swerving all over the road… making the van go in great big swaying from side-to-side motions, while they yelled, “MOM, what are you DOING??”
If you’ve seen the movie, you might remember the scene where Dory is taking Marlin in the direction of which she saw the boat going, saying “A boat? I saw a boat! It went….. this way! Follow me!”
So off they go, swimming at a frantic pace… and within a matter of moments, Dory forgets she told Marlin to follow her. She begins to swim in a big wide la-de-da, got all the time in the world, back and forth pattern. She peeks over her shoulder, sees Marlin right on her tail and thinks this strange fish is FOLLOWING her!! And, of course, HE IS! Duh… she TOLD him to follow…. but she forgot!! lol Honestly, this is sooo me. ![]()
Anyway, the girls immediately figured it out - “You’re driving like Dory SWIMS!” and cracked up. Whatever they were arguing about was forgotten and they laughed. They made me turn around at the end of the driveway and go back for a second time! Even now - a few years later, they are always begging me to stop by Dad’s office so we can “do the Dory” on our way home. They think it’s the funniest thing. Of course, I have visions of flashing blue lights in my rear view mirror, so I don’t get to do it often. Just every now and then… and I make them promise if I do ever get pulled over, they’ll help me to explain to the officer that I really have NOT been drinking. Which probably won’t matter much as they make me walk the line and blow in the breathalyser… while the girls sit in the van, pointing and laughing. But, it sure is fun to be silly some days.
