First timers

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, May 3rd, 2010

This week, my two young daughters will be taking flight for the first time… as we travel to Denver for my husband to receive his Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy. The girls are so stinkin excited about flying! We’ve discussed it a million times over the past few months, answering questions about what it’s like, the seating arrangements, what you can pack and what you can’t, what shoes they should wear to get through security easiest…. yada, yada, yada. It has been fun to watch their excitement on so many levels. The sweet innocence of youth.

Of course, this made me think about something…. when was the last time I was really REALLY excited about something I was going to do for the first time?

I guess as we get older, there are fewer and fewer things we get to experience for a “first time” anymore. No more “first kisses”. No more “first dates”. No more “first road trips”. No more “first cars”. No more “first homes”. Of course, there are certainly things like…. bungee jumping (I’ve never done that and sure as heck don’t see myself EVER doing it), parachuting (another event I have no interest in experiencing), or becoming a bee-keeper (haha, that’s funny if you knew how scared of bees I am!) Those are all things I could still do for the first time…. if I wanted to but… nahhh.

Seriously, I can only think of one recent thing I was so excited about…. and that was meeting my sweet friend Shannon for the first time. We had become such good friends online long before we ever met face to face, so that was definitely something I planned for and looked forward to for a long time. Before that…. the birth of my children was surely exciting (although technically, after the first one was born – the other births weren’t exactly “first time” events). Before that, the other thing I remember being sooo excited about was our wedding. (And…. again…. technically that wasn’t a “first time” event for me, either!)

So. I’m curious. Tell me, can you name something you got to experience for the “first time” since you’ve grown up? (Keep it G-rated folks, my kids read this!)

For me, other than buying our first home, it’s been mostly travel-related~ seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time (by the full moon, layered in snow), taking a vacation (to Canada) all by myself, visiting Washington DC & seeing all the places I read about in History class, &, of course, having a “girls’ weekend” with my blogging friends :-D

My “first” experience was driving across America alone from east coast to west coast. The hardest, longest, and yet at the same time, the easiest thing that I have ever done. Nothing that I have done so far in my life has made such a profound difference.

Hello technically all your children were first births ’cause it would be their first and I am sure they were all different and your marriage was a first to your now husband.

Oh you must be so excited for your husband! Congrats to him again :)

Sigh I cant think of anything that I am excited about… I was nervous like hell for all of my children’s births so I cant say excited. I was so calm and ready for my wedding to be done with that no excited is not what I would say I was. I am turning 40 in august and I should be excited but I am not ’cause I cant throw the sheibang that I want to. No friends LOL! And I will be parasailing on my fortieth ( I am afraid of heights and depth) so I figure good way to face those fears so I am not looking forward to that.
Ok I am just not an excitable person :( I am done now
    have a safe trip!
