Five Moments of My Week:

1. I saw an 18 year old male patient, who had never received dental care before. He said his parents couldn’t afford to bring him in so he just got used to the pain. He had extensive decay, including 7 teeth with large abscesses and several totally rotted down to the gumline. He was gentle and respectful and I felt so bad for him. I went to the hallway for a moment when tears sprang to my eyes, as I thought of how much pain he had most likely endured. I don’t know his parents – I don’t know what their financial status is or anything….. but I know that as a mother – I would have moved a mountain for my children…. would have found a way, some how…. to keep my child from going through what that poor boy had been through. I’ve been praying that he will return and get the care he needs. (He now has state insurance that will cover the charges for his dental treatment – so he can get it done. Yeahhhh!)

2. Like a big dummy, I stumbled out to the back deck with Lillie about 4 am one morning. She usually makes it until between 5 and 5:30, which is about when I’m ready to get up anyway…. but that morning, her bladder was about to burst early. So when I went out, still half asleep, in my pjs and a pair of fleece-lined boots, I realized it was actually kind of warm – maybe the mid 50s. I stretched and stood there, looking around. I noticed the bird feeder was empty so I decided I might as well fill it up since I was up anyway. I went back into the kitchen, grabbed the nearly empty 10 lb bag of bird seed and went back out. I stood on the little bench on the deck and took the top of the feeder. I opened the bag, balancing the open end into the feeder. Just as the birdseed started to shift and start out of the bag, somehow I slipped and wouldn’t you know it? I dumped the entire contents of the bag onto the deck in one fell swoop. Geez. (I left it there and went on back to bed but on my lunch hour, I managed to scoop most of it up and try again.)

3. I know nothing about basketball, nor do I care to watch it or learn anything about it. I really could care less about this whole March Madness junk (especially when it preempts my favorite tv shows!!!!! Grrrrrrrr!) And yet somehow, I ended up volunteering myself to make a giant 2ft by 3ft bracket for my husband to take to his clinic on a dry erase board. What was I thinking??? But luckily, I managed to do it and it turned out fairly good. Whaddya know?

4. I am just pages away from finishing the 3rd book in a 4 book series – the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. I haven’t read this much in months!! I realized I loaned the 4th book (Odd Hours) to my oldest daughter Suki so…. I bought it through Amazon’s Kindle app for iPhone for $6 so I’ll be reading it ON MY PHONE!! How cool is that?? (I think I am in love with my new phone!) (Watch out Mr. Lucky, I might replace you!!) (Just kiddin’!)

5. Today is my sweet Mother-in-law’s birthday! Happy Birthday Mom!! We love you!

Oh that poor young boy. Bless his heart. I love how you love your patients- they are so blessed to have you!

I can just picture the birdfeeder incident. I love you silly friend! (and I bet the birds felt like they were in heaven when they saw that whole bag dumped on the deck! :)

Happy birthday to your sweet mother in law! :)

I have read the first three Odd Thomas books and recently purchased the 4th one for my Sony Reader. I will be reading it soon. :)

I hope your patient does come back. I don’t understand some parents. If they couldn’t afford dental treatment they should have been on state assistance too. It’s too bad that the kid had to endure all that pain when there was help out there.

4:30 am is way to early to be productive. But I’m sure the birds appreciated your effort.

#1. I love how much you care about your patients. Poor kid. I can relate to the no insurance situation. There was a brief time where we made too much for state assistance and it would cost more than my monthly pay to get private.

#2. lmbo….hehehe Glad you didn’t get hurt though.

    #3. Me either. Don’t know, don’t care ;)

#4. I am so glad you are reading the Odd Thomas series. I read the first two, three is in my pile to be read.

#5. Happy Birthday to your MIL

Oh man Dory! That poor your man, how awful! Having had extensive dental work, abcessed teeth, and folks who couldn’t afford it I feel like I can totally relate. It’s so nice he had you to help him. What a loving ,caring person.

Us kids finally got dental care when the new dentist in our little town bought my folks’ farm. As part of the deal all 4 of us got taken care of. I was in junior high at the time.

I know if is quite amazing to realize someone’s first trip to the dentist would be at the age of 18, but that is the exact age I was on my first dentist visit. Can you believe it.

I had quite a few cavities as you can imagine, but no real problems.
