“Laughter through tears is one of my favorite emotions!”

(who said it and in what movie?)

I am posting these fabulous “Mom-stories” in the order that I receive them – and it just so happens that this next one is a little *lighter* then Becca’s moving words of yesterday. But, as with all things, variety is the spice of life! I love the fact that some of the mom-stories we’ll be sharing are tear-jerker’s while the rest will hopefully make you Laugh Out Loud!

This was written by another dear friend (and fellow LOST fanatic) Jean, of Wandering through Life. It was previously posted on her blog – but she brought it back out so that we could enjoy it again. I do hope you enjoy her nutty sense of humor as much as I do! Go visit her if you’d like – but be sure to come back here to see who’s *voice* will be featured tomorrow! (I don’t know about you – but I am having a blast doing this!)

I AM MY MOTHER’S DAUGHTER
I have been having a wonderful time the last few days, laughing at my mother…now, before you think badly of me laughing at an 82 year old lady, read back toward the start-up of my blog…my mother is one of my best friends, and a hero of mine…but she is also VERY unintentionally funny.

She has ALWAYS been there for me, and is one of the busiest people I know. She could easily have been one of those irritating working mothers that seems to do it all effortlessly ….but she stayed home.. so our home was always clean, decorated for every holiday, dinner on the table every evening, you know the type..well, that’s not enough for her….she also always played bridge, was a volunteer at my schools (til I BEGGED her not to), was a volunteer at the recreation center for the physically limited in our town, at the hospital, and is always on the board of everything. She never got busy enough that we suffered, but she has always just wanted to be busy. Every one of my friends over the years has accused me of having June Cleaver for a mom, and they all wanted to join our family, because she also loves us mightily, and is a lot of fun.

We have lots of holiday traditions in our family, and most of them have been a lot of work for her, but she’s the one that started them! Unfortunately for her, she has not spawned any children just like her!! So…at 82, she is still the one that has to do most of it..and loves it..I do help, but she doesn’t let go of anything easily, either. But, in her zeal to do everything she sees that needs doing, she does get forgetful, sometimes, and this is getting worse as she gets older, of course…. and this is what brings us to the laugh for the week…

She loves to make gift jars of “9 Bean soup” to give to people that enjoy it.. especially around winter. So, the other day, she bought the big bags of nine different beans that make this recipe..not having anything else big enough, she got out her huge water bath canner, and poured all those beans in it to mix them and get ready to put in jars…you see where I’m going with this, don’t you? She got interrupted during this process, and left for a while…she got back, came in the kitchen, looked around to see what she needed to do…saw the big pot, and just reflexively filled it with water and soaked them overnight..then the next morning, realized she had enough for cox’s army, and didn’t know what to do…

When I got there, around lunch, she had THREE HUGE pots of soup going, had made one trip to town for the other ingredients for the soup, and could not figure out what she was going to do with all that soup, so she had to confess it to my dad and me..and I just lost it..and when telling my best friend about it, she did too…maybe you just have to know my mom, but this is just typical…and priceless. So, now, besides a whole winter’s worth of soup in the freezer for her and dad, the fire fighters have a pot of soup, the ladies at bridge have one, and God only knows who else will have a bowl or two! Thank God she can laugh with us at herself!!

The REALLY funny part of the story, also comes when you know why I went over there in the first place. I had made fresh Cauliflower soup that morning, and had gotten carried away with myself and made enough for a whole family for a week….so I had shown up with a couple of bowls of SOUP for them for lunch!!! Maybe the apple didn’t fall as far from the tree as I think?? LOL :P
