Happy Heart

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

As a mother, I love watching my young daughters grow up. As they go through the days, I see glimpses of the future generous and charming young ladies they will become as adults.

In contrast, I see my oldest daughter, Suki, as the generous and charming young woman that she IS now. In just a few short weeks, she will be celebrating her 24th birthday! Actually, I see her in many ways as a much more mature version of myself at her age. I think she is definitely more emotionally mature than I was at 24, if the truth be told.

Last year, she moved away to Florida for a year to work with Americorps and Habitat for Humanity. You can read what I wrote about it here, if you want. I believe it was a great learning experience for her.

This past week while I was in Las Vegas, she moved back!! She’ll be living about an hour and a half away from us …. which is close enough to visit! (I’m already planning to go on Friday to see her new house and maybe… strip wallpaper for her. Yeah me!!)

I got home Saturday from Las Vegas and she came to see us on Sunday! It was fabulous to see her after all these months… but it’s also fabulous to be in this newfound place of ..?… not only mother and daughter – but also a place of friendship. We really struggled in our relationship in the past, those of you that used to read on my former blog knows more details of this but, for now, let’s suffice it to say our struggles were centered around her trying to break free as she neared adulthood and me trying to hang on tight.

I suppose we’ve both grown this past year. I’m very thankful for this new place we’re in. And I have a mother’s happy heart right now.

What a blessing to have watched from afar your relationship with Suki grow into what it is today. I’m so happy for you- and for her. God is good!

I am happy for both of you, too. :)

I am glad she has made it home. It will be fun to help her with the wallpaper. You are braver than I am…I was never any good at taking down wallpaper and I am equally as bad putting up wallpaper.

    Good luck!

It’s so hard to let them grow up and not need us like we need them to. I’m so glad things are going well. Good luck with the wallpaper!!

I am glad that she is closer and that you will get to spend more time together. More wallpaper? Me, not so much in that department!

I am so glad for both of you. You are a wonderful mother and I can only imagine how hard it is to “let go”. I will be facing that soon myself and dread it each day.

So very happy for you both!
