How do you define “fake”?

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, November 10th, 2008

Blogging has brought many MANY blessings into my life. Not only does it allow me an outlet of expression for all the random clutter that runs around in my little head, but it also has allowed me the opportunity to make friends. I never dreamed 3 years ago when I began blogging that it would change my life in so many ways. Seriously.

When I began blogging, I didn’t realize how much I would begin to look forward to the comments from others. (Or how nearly three years later - those comments would be like crack!) And when I got comments at the very beginning, that I’d follow the comment links (back to their blogs) and begin to learn about each blogger. Nor did I realize that in time, after comments had been swapped back and forth for a while, friendships would begin to form with those bloggers. And believe me when I say, they feel like real friendships.

But I can totally understand how,  when you stop and think about it - a non-blogger couldn’t understand that. A non-blogger might think that these friendships are not with “real” friends. We’re perceived as something random and odd because of how we meet online. Non-bloggers don’t understand that often times we share our inner most secrets in this forum. Actually, just typing those words out sounds NUTS to me! ;) Why would you go online and tell the world your SECRETS??

I think it’s because it’s a relatively anonymous forum, where you can say what you think and feel and be safe. Be un-judged. Ok, well, maybe NOT un-judged… but it is still much easier to blog about something to get it off your chest or out of your mind then sometimes it is to discuss it, face to face. I can’t explain why that is, but, it is what it is. Some of us just NEED to write things out, as a means of working them out in our heads. Some of us use our blogs as a way to allow distant families to keep current in our daily lives.

Back in June, when my daughters and I drove to Texas to spend the week with Shannon and Madison, she and I began to brainstorm about the idea of meeting some other bloggers.  We discussed several thoughts and ideas on the subject of a get-together: Would they want to meet US? Would they think we were NUTS to try to combine real life personalities with what we know of each other in the blogs? Would they even be willing to come to meet us? And…. would they be uncomfortable if they didn’t know each other from the blogs too? It was difficult to decide who we might ask to get together with us. We sure didn’t want to leave anyone out but we didn’t want to try to manage a 50-person get together either! lol (because that’s about how many I can think of that I’d LOVE to meet!)

We put together a very SHORT list of bloggers that began blogging around the exact same time as us, that we both knew and loved. Before long, plans were made. Invitations sent out. Tickets purchased. And… this past weekend - the six of us became REAL friends. These sweet five faces made me LAUGH this weekend! Oh Lordy, I was kidding when I said I’d pack the Depends… at times, I think I mighta needed them! :P

    LOL @ Shannon.

I could not have said these words any better. I sent my mum your link so she could get to know you guys a little better also. I notice on your traffic feed that she was here. I was going to copy this blog and paste it into an email for her so she would understand a little better. So glad she stopped by.
