Memorable Mondays

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, June 9th, 2008

So, I have much to tell from the vacation and maybe even some pictures…. of actual PEOPLE. Be on the lookout for a private post to show up either later today or tomorrow. I’m not quite sure how I feel about pasting my face on here for just anyone to see but… I’m ok with you guys seeing me. ;) I’ll send out the password to view via email upon request.

But, today, I am going to start a whole new Monday edition to this blog. If I can, anyway …. you know me, it’s all sort of loosely thought-out. It may stick, it may not. I was thinking of making Monday’s a *random memory* day…. to share tidbits from my past. Now, I personally find it ironic as heck that I am going to feature random memories when …. well… we all know my memory SUCKS! Do you see the irony in that? lol But, let’s try it anyway. (And remember to send any Dads-stories you might wanna share…. June is the month of the Dad!)

*****

I am a big fan of morning radio shows. I grew up on them… full of witty banter and lots of laughter. Love love love them. Nowadays though, my local station is NOT the type of morning show I mean, so… I resorted to podcasting a fabulous show out of Philly, Preston & Steve. They crack me up, daily. I usually run a day or two behind, downloading every night to listen to the next day. Except during the time I’ve been working on this website (yeah, remember, just before I lost everything 2 weeks ago…. but that’s another story… still stings though when I think of all the time I had put into it before I screwed up.. ) When we left for vacation, I had a few weeks of shows to listen to in order to catch up. (Well, except for listening to the Friday recaps after LOST was on… I stayed current with those to hear their discussion of my favorite show.)

I digress, my mention of them was only to say that I heard them interviewing this man last week while on vacation and it reminded me of something. Do you remember John Oates, of Hall & Oates fame? They’ve been around forever so I’m guessing you know who I mean… and you might even readily have a mental image of them in your mind. I know I did, when I heard the interview. You can listen to it here:

In case you didn’t get to listen, he is promoting a book, “The Book of Bert” about famous mustached men in history. He says he shaved the mustache off in 1990 but when I heard his name, that is exactly the mental image I got of him… big heavy ’stache. :)

I was reminded of being about 16 years old and seeing them in concert. It was one of my first concerts - I was sooo excited that my parents had allowed me to go - since the concert was a few hours drive from home. We’d arrived at the venue several hours early and we were killing time window-shopping at the nearby stores. I was with my high-school boyfriend and a friend of his - just the three of us. We were in a bookstore just looking around. I was walking forward while sort of looking down to my left at the titles of books as I passed. Being the clutz that I am and not paying attention, I ran full force into someone. Hard. Stepped on the mans foot and ricocheted off his body. I stopped, stammering an apology immediately. The man said, “No problem, it’s ok,” and he moved on. I began to walk again as my boyfriend was frantically poking me on the shoulder. I turned and said, “WHAT!? I didn’t run into that guy on purpose!”

He said, “Did you SEE who that was?”

“No, why?”

“It was John Oates! You just ran into JOHN OATES!!” he said, very excited and loud!

I said, “Shhh, he’ll hear you,” seeing the mans back still walking away from us near the other end of the store, “Who the heck is John Oates anyway?” I whispered.

Yes, I’m so bright. :)

He said, “WHAT? John Oates. Of HALL AND OATES?! You know… the whole REASON we are HERE.”

Oh yeah. Him. I knew that.
