MOM! MOM! MOM!

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, July 21st, 2008

We got home late Saturday, after our wonderful relaxing and fun-filled family weekend away. We managed to squeak together a rather hodge-podge meal of random leftovers and crashed hard. It’s always fun to be away but soooo nice to be home in our big ole’ fabulous bed!

Sunday dawned early for me - watching a movie while I savored the quiet house and my beloved coffee. I knew I had a list as long as my arm of things to do but couldn’t quite make myself actually DO anything for a while. Lazy, lazy me. :) Finally, the girls and I shot off to Wal-Mart for the biggest old list of school supplies (it’s going to be here before we know it!) and groceries. As we got home, somehow the conversation turned to one of those Remember the time that…. it’s a story good enough for sharing, I think.

One day a few years ago, we’d just brought my sweet little Sydney (the Jack Russell terrier) home from the vet - where she’d been for her routine shots and physical. All was well with her until…. we got here! lol

As we pulled into the driveway, the usual melee occurred - as Beebo, Sydney and I are trying to get out of the van, Luby opened the front door and she and Lillie (my weimaraner) came rushing out - excited we’re back and wondering where the heck Syd got to go when she had to stay home! (If she only KNEW, she’d not have been so excited..) Picture bouncing dogs, weaving in and out of our legs, wiggling their rears in excitement to see each other. Meanwhile, Luby was trying to get into my arms and I was carrying my purse and probably papers from the vet - I don’t remember exactly, but I know my hands were getting full as I was reaching in to gather up and load my arms with the stuff.

I pushed the automatic door locks as usual and pushed the drivers’ side door closed with my hip. The moment I did, I heard the loudest and most frantic YELP you’ve ever heard!! And it didn’t stop, YELP! YELP! YELP!LOUD and SCREAMING right in my ear…..

I look down and see poor little Syd and her teensy little short docked-tail CAUGHT in the van door! Beebo was screaming MOM! MOM! MOM! and tried to shove me aside to open the door as I was trying to open the door. Both of us realizing it was locked at the same time! I was frantically fumbling in my purse for the keys as Beebo was screaming MOM MOM MOM still, tears pouring down her face and the dog was crying YELP YELP YELP! and Lillie was right under my feet, trying to get to her sister dog to see what was going on. And it evidently scared Sydney so badly that she started squirting pee out everywhere as she was flipping around in pain and agony and screaming the whole time!

Holy moly! Talk about a nightmare event! Poor girl… I got the door open and it released her tail and the yelping stopped, the peeing stopped and she immediately ran FAR from the van door! Lillie was right in her face, trying to figure out what happened. Beebo was crying and panicked that we’d killed her! I scooped Syd up and ran into the house - nearly trampling down my kids underfoot and my husband who’d appeared at the door when he heard all the commotion.

Her little nub tail was swelling quickly and she sure didn’t like me messing with it as I felt around, trying to determine if the skin was broken. I called the vet, who actually laughed at me - being as we’d just left there 10 minutes before I called! She said that a dogs’ tail is cartilage and would probably be fine, listing out the things I should watch for to occur if it was going to be a problem.

Five minutes after it happened, Syd was back to wagging her tail at me as I talked to her. It might have wagged a little slower, but it was wagging nonetheless.

OH my goodness! What a crazy story! I can only imagine how upset poor tender hearted Beebo was! How great that little Syd’s tail wasn’t really hurt. My question is………is she now scared of the van?

Oh, poor thing!!! That’s the worst…when it happens to our pets. We can’t explain to them that we’re hurrying and it’ll be ok. At least when it’s our kids, they can understand us….like the time I shut A’s pinky in the car door. *sigh* How many times have we told the kids NOT to put their hands anywhere near the car doors when someone is getting in or out? Luckily, her pinky was ok too. :o)

I’m glad Sydney forgave you? And, I’m with Shannon, is she still afraid of the van or did she get over it? :o)

sounds like one of those sitcom episodes with all the rushing and the screaming, you must have been freak out, but Syd’s all right, definitely a great story to tell again

    Oh poor thing!

But you know, this would only happen to you. It’s not like she has a really long tail that can get caught some place. LOL

Poor Sydney!! That must have hurt like the dickens. I can just imagine the pandemonium that you described. Luckily it was her tail. I thought you were going to say it was her FOOT. Now that would have been awful. I love the picture of your doggies.

Have a great week, my friend.

I have had my pointer finger crushed in a door, so I know how that poor puppy felt. I am glad that she is ok! Great story, and yes is the dog afraid of the van today?

Hugs, and have a great week!

Well, despite what you might think… Syd is NOT in the least scared of the van. She still jumps up at the sound of jingling keys, hoping she gets to go too! And both of the dogs still love to run outside and greet us when we get home if someone opens the door, letting them out of the house. Weirdos. ;)

Wow. You don’t want to have one of THOSE heart-racing moments happen very often. Hope your canine pal is fully recovered. And you too!
