Monday Memories

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, March 2nd, 2009

I’ve often mentioned how much I love music…. and how certain songs will carry me back to a certain time and place in my memory. The thought of that leads me to ask: Have you ever smelled something that made you think of someone or something in particular?

Polo Blue smelled on any man makes me think of my husband.

Mexican food makes me think of my mother.

Bananas make me think of my Granny and her yummy banana pudding.

I don’t eat fish because the smell of it makes me think of fish tanks – after YEARS of helping out in my families’ pet shop as a young girl.

The smell of a dental office makes me feel at home.

The smell of popcorn makes me think of a theater.

The smell of coffee makes me happy.

The smell of a fireplace makes me think of (of all the crazy things) my ex-husbands grandparents. (They always had a wood-burning fireplace in the winter.)

And… the smell of kerosene makes me think of my old dog Grunt.

Yep, that was really his name: Grunt. He was a fawn-colored pit bull that was given to me when he was a teensy weensy puppy and I was a senior in high school. He was cute as could be when he was a young puppy, with an over-sized head and scrawny body. He made the funniest noises all the time, hence the name, Grunt.

As he grew, his body caught up to his over-sized noggin and he was one strong dog – all muscle. During the long winter months, he would sleep on the floor in front of the kerosene heater at the old house I was living in, all stretched out like he owned the place. Lemme just tell you, that dog had the WORST perpetual case of gas then I thought was possible for a dog. He’d lay there and pass gas which would rise up and get caught in the blower from the kerosene heater and that obnoxious foul odor would swirl around the room, making my eyes water. Literally.

I’d say, “Awww Grunt! Not again!” and frantically fan at the air in front of my face.

He’d sorta raise his head to look at me, in recognition that I’d spoken his name, half the time with what appeared to be a cock-eyed smile on his face.

Awww… the memories. :P

In high school, a friend of mine had a boyfriend who had a Boston Terrier named Grunt. That dog STANK all the time! Must be something about that name. . .
