Spring Break!

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Friday afternoon - ALL the kids came barreling out of school in anticipation of having a WHOLE week off of school for the long-awaited Spring Break. Some families from my area were loading up their mini-vans and heading south - 12 to 14 hours south, to the sandy beaches of places like Destin or Gulf Shores. Some were loading up to go to the always-something-to-do area of Gatlinburg TN - a popular place only about 5 hours away. And still yet, others were headed 12 to 14 hours east to the coastline. And sadly, many families were NOT going anywhere. Those kids were STILL happy to be out of school for the week, I betcha.

We were … doing none of those things. Well, we hadn’t planned any of those things. We are going to the beach at the end of May, right after school lets out for the summer (and I can’t wait!) So for Spring Break week, it’s life as usual. Work for both me and my hubby while the girls stay with their sitter.

Sometime around Tuesday or Wednesday of last week, my hubby mentioned that he’d like the girls and I to accompany him this weekend while he travels out of town for a continuing education course. At first I said NO. But then, the more I thought about it - I really couldn’t come up with a legitimate reason for us NOT to go with him. We waited until the last minute to tell the girls (in case I changed my mind) and they were EXCITED to be going somewhere, ANYwhere. So Friday afternoon, we set off for ……. drumroll please……. Evansville, Indiana!! Now, no offense to anyone in that area but it’s NOT the beach - which is my favorite place in the world. So every place else automatically pales in comparison a little to me.

We arrived late enough on Friday night to do nothing but get settled in the room and get to bed. Unfortunately, about an hour into the drive - my little Luby was coughing a LOT and we had to do a breathing treatment as soon as we got here (we never travel without the nubulizer because of her allergy-induced asthma problems). Saturday morning, my hubby left for his course early so the girls and I had a whole day to kill. We had big plans to do this and that, but, Luby was feeling really lousy. We managed to hit a few stores but all we bought were some books and picked up some sandwiches for lunch and came back to the room. Luckily, we were now the proud owner of some books to occupy us - oh, and of course, there is always Nickelodeon on tv. :)When my hubby got out of class, we eventually headed out to dinner at Biaggi’s Ristorante (which was YUM, by the way). All in all, it was a rather lazy Saturday - not what you’d expect to do when you’re away from home but quite pleasant.

So now, it’s Sunday and I write this from the lovely hotel room - and Luby is feeling even MORE yucky, with a low grade fever, sore throat and still coughing her head off. We’ll have to check out this morning and find someplace to hang out all day until hubby gets out of his class and we start the long drive home. The girls and I had planned to spend the day at the James John Audobon Park which is not too far away from where we are staying but….. I don’t think that’s going to happen now. Anyway, my plans to explore the area and take lots of pics didn’t quite pan out like I’d hoped but, it’s ok. Sick daughters take precedence over sight-seeing.
