Stoneware and Churchill Downs

Knowing our girls weekend would zip by all too fast, the six of us (me, Shannon, Jen, Bek, Stacy and Meg) were up early so as not to miss a moment of our time. Our hotel offered a continental breakfast and all the COFFEE you can handle! You know me, I’m all about the Juan Valdez in my cup. (I took my own Hazelnut creamer with me. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone…. they might think me odd!) After breakfast, we had a reservation at Louisville Stoneware to do a “Paint your own” piece of our choosing, which they would later fire and ship out to each of us.
There were lots to choose from and although I went into it thinking I sort of knew what I wanted to do…. I still wasted a LOT of time looking around and then, deciding on a pattern. This is what I did for the first hour…. staring at my plate, waiting for inspiration to hit me in the head! I am happy with what I ended up doing on the platter and I so look forward to getting the end result in the mail in a few weeks.
My family decided to join us for the day, knowing we were headed to Churchill Downs after the pottery painting. They arrived just in time to get a couple of group shots for us just before we headed off to eat lunch. (I have to say, the girls made me PROMISE to take them back some day soon so that they can paint their own piece too!)

Churchill Downs was so much fun! The weather cooperated even though rain was in the forecast - it was cold but it was DRY, thank goodness. Cold AND wet is just yuck. I’ve only been to the horse races one other time but this was MUCH more fun! I know the other bloggers have each shared their perspectives on the day so feel free to go read them too.
My hubby and daughters loved being with the whole group - I think for girls, it was great fun to meet these ladies who they have heard the names of for a LONG time! For my hubby, I’m sure there was a certain sense of relief to see that none of them were psychos!
He’s always been a bit more leery of me meeting other bloggers because so often all you hear are the horror stories of people meeting online. (That’s an interesting subject for another day…. wonder why that is? I’m sure there are THOUSANDS of people that meet in this way and become lifelong friends (as we did!) but you only hear about the ones with awful outcomes! It’s sort of like the way people talk about a root canal being so darn painful - when in reality we do hundreds of them at my office a year. Most are routine and uneventful, with the patients doing perfectly fine. Bizarre, huh?)
My sweet Beebo watched a couple of others pick a horse from the paddocks and then place their bets on them. She is smart enough to stand back and observe the proceedings, taking it all in. After a couple of people picked winning horses, she decided to give it a whirl too. Her Daddy took her to place her $5 bet on the horse of her choosing. Just as the race was starting to begin, she said, “Dad, if my horse wins - do I get to KEEP the money??” He laughed and said, “Sure honey.” Smart girl.
Her horse won! Needless to say, that was the sweetest $30 ever!
The rest of the day was spent freezing our tails off in the downtown area of 4th Street Live, where we shopped a while and then had dinner. When we got back to the hotel, we sat around swapping stories until the wee hours of the morning. I must say, I can’t remember WHEN I’ve laughed so hard! My abs were sore the next day from ALL the laughing! ![]()

(I know that’s not a word, but nothing else seemed to fit! lol) I wish I could’ve been there, but I’ve been enjoying reading the stories about your adventure this past weekend! :o) What a blast! Doryon 12 Nov 2008 at 2:17 pm 5LOL Meg…. who you calling strange?
Jenon 12 Nov 2008 at 5:38 pm 6I loved meeting your family as well. Your husband is a real gentleman and I ADORED your girls. I am so happy they were able to hang with us for awhile! I have so many great memories from our weekend together.
Stacyon 12 Nov 2008 at 6:19 pm 7I am so glad that we also got to meet the girls and your hubby. They were so sweet. I loved how thrilled they were that I went up the outside escalator with them. That really tickeled me.
Dory @ Lucky Doritoon 12 Nov 2008 at 6:55 pm 8My husband really enjoyed meeting all of you too. And Stacy - the girls were THRILLED you rode the escalator with them since their mama is a big ole scaredy-cat! If only the escalators were like those moving sidewalks at the airport, I could handle them. It’s the height that bothers me!
