Thankful Thursday

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

I am thankful for giving birth to healthy babies.

I am thankful that my daughters have grown into healthy young ladies.

I am thankful to have been able to provide nourishment, clothing, and a warm dry bed for them to sleep in each night.

I am thankful to have a loving husband that shares the responsibility of raising our daughters and providing a large portion of the financial means to do so.

I am thankful for all the blessings the good Lord has given our family.

And…. I feel it’s high time I do a little something to return some of my good fortune to others. After having a discussion with a dear friend of mine that has been going on medical mission trips to Guatemala each year, I feel the need to do something. Many of you know that I want to participate at some point by GOING along and using my skills and knowledge as a dental hygienist to work with the dental team in whatever capacity I can. But…. in the meantime, until that happens:

I want to do something.

And I’d like to ask you to help me.

My friend Barb is working diligently on a project she is calling Project Alfredo, after a sweet little baby born with a cleft lip/cleft palate that she met this past January. He was unable to receive enough nourishment due to his cleft palate and inability to suck effectively and he died as a result. His mother tried but just didn’t have the proper access to cleft palate nipples for him. He is probably only one in MANY that die for the same reasons – an inability to create suction and therefore, suck the milk from a bottle or breast.

As part of her project, she is calling all over creation, getting manual breast pumps donated (because electricity is so sporadic in some regions) along with the appropriate bottles and nipples. She plans to find some type of bag to put these items in, along with some diapers and other essentials for the mom and newborn to leave the hospital with.

This is where I come in. And you. If you can.

Each year, I attend a dental hygiene conference and come home with a bag from each. Each year, my husband attends physical therapy conferences and comes home with a bag from each. Ya’ll know what I’m talking about…. you probably have one or two lying around also, huh?

I asked Barb if it mattered that the bag had something printed on them (like conference bags usually do). She said it didn’t matter at all. The only thing she’d like to have are bags that either zip or velcro across the top – some type of secure closure so items don’t fall out.

I asked Barb if it would help her if I took over the bag part of the project for her – to which she profusely thanked me! I’ve looked around my house and think I can come up with nearly a dozen bags on my own. She’d like to have as many as 50 bags…. but of course, 100 would be even better.

I am asking you to pray about it. I know times are hard here in our rich lands of the US. If you don’t want to help or just can’t, I understand. Don’t feel bad at ALL. But, if you feel led to do so, please donate an extra bag or two. You can email me (luckydorito@gmail.com) and I’ll send you my mailing address.

By the way, you can read a little about the Children of the Americas here. I just found the blog also – can’t wait to go back and check it out.

Of course you already know that I love this idea and you can absolutely count me in! I have some I can contribute and will send out an email and see if I can get teacher friends (who have TONS of bags) to donate some.

Love your heart sweet friend for helping and love YOU!

Next year, I am going on a medical mission trip to Haiti… maybe you could go with our group and use your dental expertise in the clinic there? Wouldn’t it be fun to do something like that together?

I don’t have any velcro or zip bags that are big like shopping bags – would gallon sized ziploc bags work? I could send you a few boxes of those, if it would be helpful….

What about diaper bags? Would those work? I might know where to get some of those.

@Shannon – Thanks for asking others and being willing to help!

@Jen – I’m not sure about the gallon size bags – I think she was hoping for more of like a *tote* bag so that the moms could keep everything together. But I will ask her – thanks for offering!

@Stacy – A diaper bag? Sort of like a tote bag? …. If yes, then SURE! :)

@Kat – Bless your heart. I’ll email you my information – you might still have it from the Christmas card swap a few years ago. Thanks!
