Do you remember last week when I asked you the hypothetical multiple choice question of what you’d do when laying in the dental chair and you were asked to turn towards the clinician?

Well, overwhelmingly, the answers were A: you’d simply turn your head.

But…. in practical application – what REALLY happens is different.

Let me explain:

Many years ago, I noticed this odd trend among dental patients: Inevitably, within the first few minutes of laying back in the chair – EVERY patient has to scratch/rub their nose. Apparently messing around in the mouth triggers some sort of “itch” on the face, 99% of the time on the nose. For some reason, this discovery cracked me up! I’d glance at the clock when I first leaned a patient back and then would glance again when the patients’ hand surreptitiously rose to rub their nose. And then I’d giggle to myself.

I mean, really… it had nothing to do with anything. It just sort of cracked me up.

Eventually, I noticed another odd trend. I’ve been paying attention to this unusual trend for the past few years because it is sooo totally ODD to me.

When I have a female patient laying in the chair and I ask her to turn towards me, she does so by simply turning her head towards me. Simple. Easy peasy.

But…. when I have a male patient in the chair – almost every single time he turns toward me by a much more complicated method: A man will raise his head off the chair, turn towards me, and lay his head back down.

Do NOT even ask me why. I don’t get it.

Mr. Lucky does it this way…. and when I laughed at him the last time he did it when I was cleaning his teeth – he couldn’t explain it. Other than the fact that his hair didn’t get messed up as easily that way. (LOL   Are you KIDDING ME???? His hair is an inch long – how bad could it get messed up??)

Everyone of you said you’d simply roll your head. Seems logical to me…. and yet, that sure isn’t what happens!

There you have it. The random little things that bring humor into the world of dentistry.
