The Itsy Bitsy Spider

I found this post written last year sometime, of an event that happened at while out of town on a different trip and thought I’d post it again….
The morning sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden glow on the walls. I decided to finish the project I had begun the evening before – cleaning out kitchen cabinets. I had made quite a pile of old baby bottle nipples and rings and caps that had been shoved to the back of an upper cabinet. I stepped down off the little 2-step stool I was on and was regarding my pile of items, wondering if they were Goodwill material or trash. I noticed the old wall-mounted phone under the cabinet had the long cord draped across the top of it and I reached over to drop it to the floor. My hand drazed through a sticky cobweb and as I jerked my hand back, trying to brush the cobweb off – I glimpsed a big black spider crawl from behind the phone to behind the cabinet. I peered under the cabinet, trying to see how it had squeezed in, still wiping strand of sticky cobweb from my fingers and brushing my hands on my pantlegs.
I went back to regarding the pile of bottle nipples – deciding they were trash material – no one would want to re-use them. As I started to reach for a garbage bag, I noticed the shadow of something dark in the bright sunlight hitting the wall. I looked down to the floor, to see what might be casting that shadow, and saw the black spider creeping up an almost invisible strand of web …. that was still somehow attached to my left hand. I am usually not bothered by spiders but this one was rather large and well…. it was headed directly towards my hand! I could not get the strand to break free, just seemed too strong, like a wire. I caught a glimpse of a pair of kiddie-scissors laying on the counter and I scooped them up to cut the web. I was too late – the spider was ON MY HAND!! I freaked out a little and not knowing what else to do, smashed my hands together to squash it – while simultaneously squealing and doing an uncontrollable bug-dance with my feet. I felt a momentary stinging sensation just before I shook my hands to drop the spider to the floor. It had a smashed and oozing body but was not dead. The spider began to lurch away.
The tiny toy poodle puppy that had been sleeping across the room came running in all the commotion and squealing I’d been doing – and sniffed at the spider. The spider somehow jumped onto the puppy’s front paw and he squealed in pain and began to wretch. I came to my senses fast enough when I heard the puppy yelp to stomp on the spider with my tennis shoe and grab the puppy up off the floor. It was wretching, beginning to vomit all over itself. I immediately turned on the water in the kitchen sink and was trying to wash vomit from the puppy so I could see what had happened to his paw. I noticed as I was washing the puppy that my index finger on my left hand was turning such a deep shade of purple that it was nearly black in color and it looked swollen, as if the skin was stretching tight to cover it. It was at that moment…..
….that I woke up.
I sat bolt upright in bed Sunday morning at the hotel and looked quickly at my finger. It was too dark with the heavy hotel curtains pulled shut to see so I jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom to flip on the light, without waking my sister in the next bed. My finger, in the harsh fluorescent light, looked normal. No purple color. No fat sausage look to it. Well, not anymore than usual, anyway.
I rarely ever dream anything that frightens me. But, I have looked at my finger a hundred times since then …. just to be sure. It was an extremely vivid dream, right down to the littlest detail. Wonder what it means?
