The Pioneer Woman

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, December 14th, 2009

If you’ve been reading here at Lucky Dorito for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed the tab on the top of the page that says BLOGROLL. That’s where you can find a list of some of my favorite blogs to read. (Which reminds me, I probably need to update that more often, huh? I know there are others that I read that aren’t on the list and some that are on the list that aren’t even blogging anymore. But…. I digress.)

I’ve been reading Ree, The Pioneer Woman for a long time – several years, at least. She’s fresh and funny and I love love love her photographs.

So when I found out that she would be in Nashville as part of her book tour – I was THRILLED! I rearranged my afternoon patients that day so that I could leave early enough to beat the rush hour traffic in Nashville and get to the bookstore early, although she wasn’t scheduled until 7pm.

Of course, last Tuesday (which was the BIG day) was a rainy nightmare of a day. I spent all day wondering if I’d be able to see to drive the 100 miles to get there. I hurriedly changed out of my scrubs into clothes a little more presentable and hit the road a little after 4pm. You know what happens in central time zone on a rainy day? It gets dark even EARLIER than the usual 5pm! There is nothing worse than driving in the dark with a heavy downpour of rain. Sheesh.

I guess you can imagine what happened.

I made it about 25 miles before I was overcome with panic. I had a death grip on the steering wheel because the wind was blowing my van all over the place. I got off the interstate to pull myself together and ended up bursting into tears.

I couldn’t do it.

I drove back home. I didn’t get to meet her. I didn’t get my book signed. I didn’t get the second book that I purchased over the phone the day before to ensure that I got a ticket to the book signing signed either. Nor do I have the book, although they are supposed to be mailing it to me.

I was so stinkin’ disappointed and MAD at myself for being a big chicken baby. But…. it’s ok. I’ve still got her cookbook. I can still read her blog and adore her photos from afar. Right?

I’m so sorry you didn’t get to meet her. I know how disappointed you were and I hate that. It’s just one of the million or so times that I wish I lived closer because I labsolutely would have gone with you! I am proud of you for trying by yourself though and am thankful that we got to chat on your drive home!

    I love you sweetest friend!
    (ONLY 12 DAYS! :)

Oh i’m so sorry the weather was being difficult and that you didn’t get to see PW. I”m sure you are really disappointed! I don’t like driving in the dark on a good day let alone when it’s pouring rain

I was hoping Pioneer Woman was going to be closer to my neck of the woods on her book tour, but Nashville was the closest. That still would have been at least a 10 hour drive. Don’t think that was quite feasible. So, I did the next best thing. I shipped my three cookbooks I bought (for my sisters for Xmas and myself) to her for her to sign and ship back. You could still have that done maybe.

I am so sorry that you didn’t get to meet her, too, but you did what was right for you, and you can, like all the rest of us, admire her from afar. I have her cookbook and love it. I love that Mitch is cooking from it!

    Hugs to you,
    Becca

I went to her signing here in Tulsa, which was her kick-off, and they were sold out of books. She had another signing but it was during the day. I DID get to see her and all her family that evening. MM is gorgeous, and my favorite, her brother Mike, was adorable!! He was getting his picture taken with lots of people. Just so you know (and if you’ve read her blog lately you do), you can MAIL your books to her, she will sign them and return them to you. Not as good as in person, but maybe it would make you feel a little bit better!

Big big bummer! Dory we all have things that stop us from accomplishing stuff. Sorry you didn’t get a chance to meet her.

@Vonnie! I had the GREATEST Christmas card in my mail today! :D

I am so sorry you didn’t get to see her. Honestly though, your safety is more important than a getting to meet Ree for a total of 2 minutes! :)

I am sorry that you were so disappointed. Stupid weather anyhow. I am glad that you are safe though.

I put this on my Christmas list. I hope my hubby gets it for me. Sadly, I don’t see her coming anywhere near my hometown.
