Thursday Thirteen for my hubby

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Thursday, June 12th, 2008

It’s right around the corner.

Father’s Day.

As much as I love the whole *breakfast in bed* thing that I had on Mother’s Day…. this is the weekend *pay-back* rolls around. ;) I don’t mind cooking…. (I sure don’t LOVE it like my sweet friend Shannon) but breakfast has never been my favorite meal to cook - mainly because I don’t usually eat it! Oh well …. for my hubby on Father’s Day - I’ll make an exception! :P

He is a precious man, my husband. He just smiles when I say that to him because he’s a big guy - not someone you’d look at and readily associate with the word “precious”, you know - like a little puppy or a newborn baby. But he is indeed precious. I’ve told him many times over the years that he is a much better parent then I am. He is kind and warm and caring and loving and VERY patient with our girls. He is wayyy more patient then I am! One of his favorite sayings is *Give a man a fish, he eats today. TEACH a man to fish, he eats every day.* He’s always saying things like, “They need to learn to fish. If I do it for them, they might get it done but learn nothing. If they learn how to do it, they can do it everyday.”

And, the man is extremely practical. For every frivolous care-free whim in my body, he is grounded and rational. (We balance each other out nicely! Most of the time, anyway. Sometimes we make each other CRAZY because of our differences.) Giving him gifts can be quite challenging because he rarely wants anything *just because* (which might be one of my favorite reasons to shop! lol) A few years ago (2, I think) he mentioned wanting a new wallet. I got him one, from COACH, and it’s STILL sitting in the box. He likes it and says, “Oh yeah, I need to switch to that” and yet, never does. Because right now, his old one is still *holding together* so he’s going to use it until it falls apart! The clothes he gets at Christmas are still sitting with the tags on them in February most years. It cracks me up - I can’t WAIT to try my stuff on and be wearing it! It’s not that he doesn’t like them or anything - he just waits until he really NEEDS something and then pulls it out of *reserve*.

I’ve been asking him for a month what he wants for Father’s Day - this is the list he has given me. I still have no idea what to do, most of the tangible items I would never be able to pick out to his standards … but I’m sure whatever I do will involve a wild-goose chase scavenger hunt like last year. hehehe :P (Honey - I’m kidding, if you’re reading this. Really. Don’t expect that or anything. Really.)

Thirteen Things my hubby would like for Father’s Day:
(and my commentary because most are SO not things I would want as a gift)

1. A big fancy stainless steel grill from Lowe’s. (We do need a new grill but for Father’s Day? lol)

2. A new hedge trimmer. (Uhhh. You’re kidding, right?)

3. A truck…. not just any truck but one of those massive ones with an extended cab….obviously this is so far out of our budget, I didn’t even bother to remember the exact one he says (about a gazillion times over the years!)

4. New shoes. (ok, I can get on board with that)

5. New clothes. (right up my alley…)

6. Have an electrician come and check the wiring in our house. (WHAT??? Are you KIDDING me?)

7. A fishing pole. Or a *rod and reel*, he called it. (He might love to fish but he’s not been in probably 10 years. Isn’t that sad?)

8. A day of rest. (Amen to that. Would you like that gift-wrapped?)

9. Something from Cabela’s. (He grabbed a catalog and a highlighter for this one. That looks promising, huh?)

10. Gas prices to go back down. (ok. me too.)

11. A hat. (To go with the other hundred of them he has already.)

12. Tools. (Like, a screwdriver? Or like… POWER tools? For what, pray tell?)

13. Nothing. He has everything he wants because he has us… his wife and daughters. He actually said that. (I’m thinking… “Oh that is sooo sweet! But… come on dude - you can do better then that!” lol)

How about getting an idea of what he likes in a grill so that you can shop for it together? Maybe a date night and you can do it together?

    2. A new hedge trimmer. (Uhhh. You’re kidding, right?)

You might want to go here to check out reviews on those hedge trimmers:

    http://products.howstuffworks.com/hedge-trimmer-reviews.htm

Tell him that trucks might be coming down in price, what with the price of gas, and if he saves his pennies and dimes, who knows?
    ;-)

What kind of shoes does he like? You can find all sorts of deals, all sorts of places! :-)

Same with clothes…have you been to http://www.llbean.com?

Electrician? Now that seems like it might be KINDA important, might want to move that up the list? ;-)

Cabela’s might be really good for the fishing pole! Mitch has a bunch he never uses, I bet I can get you a really good deal!

A day of rest. Would you like that (or isn’t it you?) wrapped?
    ;-)

A gift card from Cabela’s never goes out of style!

Don’t we all..we need to do something about that!

What kind of hat is he looking for?

Is he trying to become Tim The Toolman?

    13. Nothing. How about a nice meal and a quiet picnic just you and the girls? Maybe a family picture?

    Huggles,
    Becca

    Becca - you’re a NUT! hehehe

They were in no particular order - just random things he has mentioned over the past month. I suppose my thinking is that… some of these, like the grill and the electrician are things we will GET anyway. WHY would you want them for a gift?

  3. Stacyon 12 Jun 2008 at 5:01 pm 3

Why are men so stinkin hard to buy for? And if you do indeed get him nothing, you will hear about it until kingdom comes. (at least that is what happens at my house)

My hubby decided that this year all he wants is $50 and the ability to golf all day Sunday. Have at Big Guy!

My DH asked for a pooper scooper for Christmas. He got it and immediately ran out to scoop poop……he has loved it ever since.

We spent big $$ on the recliner for b-day/anniversary/father’s day so all he’s getting otherwise is some cologne from DD’s 2 & 3 and a gift certificate for the new Coldplay CD that comes out next week from DD4.

Thanks for the ideas… :) Trav hasn’t offered up any ideas and I am a terrible “gifter.” I impulse buy things that he will never, ever use!

  6. Jeanon 12 Jun 2008 at 8:03 pm 6

I’m with your hubby, I always ask for things I want.. like a recliner, or a mixer, or a vacuum, or a hedge trimmer.. some of us just like getting stuff like that!! Give the man what he really wants!! The point is that it’s something HE wants.. not what you want to give!! I’m happiest when everything I get is an appliance or something I can use in the yard or something.. so get a Cabela’s gift card, or a hedge trimmer.. that’s my vote!!LOL (like we get one!!LOL)
    hugs,
    Jean

Oh, yeah.. what about a professional portrait of you and the girls in a nice frame for his desk??

  8. Doryon 12 Jun 2008 at 8:10 pm 8

I had a picture done of me and the girls last year for Father’s Day. He loved it too! :)

  9. Tracieon 12 Jun 2008 at 9:46 pm 9

I got hubby one of those ear things for his new phone, so he can work & talk at the same time. If you asked him what he wanted he would say a flat screen tv? Bless his heart, he’s not getting it! LOL

  10. Bobon 13 Jun 2008 at 12:12 am 10

So…. Hubby is getting shoes and clothes?? What no tie??? Heck! He already has YOU!! God knows what I will get! Probably socks, underwear and hankerchiefs!! I bought my Dad his very own Star!! http://www.starregistry.com I think he gets it tomorrow!! He’s REALLY into Astronomy so he will love it!! So now there is a new star named Robert Baker Bowers!! LOL!!

Oh, a fishing pole and something from Cabela’s. Sounds like something my hubby would want. The power tools thing sounds like him too. Must be a guy thing. Hope he (and you) have a wonderful day.

Thanks! (Poor guy, he didn’t get a fishing pole or tools. He is sooo deprived, huh?)
