Uno what happened??

Posted by Dory @ Lucky Dorito on Monday, July 13th, 2009

This past week, my sweet Beebo celebrated turning 12. Since her birthday falls in the middle of summer, it’s never been easy to plan a party that includes school friends, with some out of town and some away at camp and some just… out of touch over the break. And you know, twelve is a tough age – do you have a boy/girl party? do you just have a girls sleepover? what to do, what to do?

We’ve talked about it for months, knowing it was coming … and could never reach a decision. She was just thrilled that her birthday would fall while Shannon and Madison were here and she kept saying that was gift enough. (Awwww. Isn’t she precious?)

During their lunch hour the day before, we met up with my husband and his staff at a local mexican restaurant that we all love. While sitting there, someone mentioned we should tell them it was her birthday so they could sing to her (which includes a little smear of cool whip in the face – something everyone hates…. nothing like being made to look like a fool in front of everyone you know and love, while we all laugh, of course.) Luby wanted them to know but was too chicken to tell them, knowing the repercussions might be fierce. Mr. Lucky said he couldn’t tell them because Beebo had expressly asked him not to.

It fell to me. She hadn’t asked me not too! So while she was in the restroom, I told.

They got her. First the sombrero….

(Look at Luby smiling!)

Then the cool whip.

Whoopsie…. looks like I’m getting the evil eye.

Oh… come on…. you’d have done it too! :P

When the big day arrived, we baked her a cake and decorated it. We took her shopping at the mall and let her pick out some stuff. We had lunch out. We all went to a matinee. And then we went out for a dinner celebration!

During dinner, the strangest thing happened. One of the restaurant servers walked over and said to her, “I heard you were having a birthday. I wanted you to have this” and handed her an Uno card.

She looked at it and looked at us, clearly puzzled.

Shortly after, another server arrived, with another Uno card.

She was more puzzled.

And the cards kept coming. We were all laughing.

Madison asked our server WHAT’S UP WITH THE UNO CARDS?????? and he pleaded innocence. (Mr. Lucky said Madison would make a good attorney some day since she GRILLED him so well!)

Before long she has seven Uno cards and then they came out with her birthday dessert.

She studied the cards, trying to figure it out.

All of a sudden, it dawned her: seven cards!!! could it be a phone number??

She pulled out the ones that are commonly the first three digits of local numbers….

and then stared at the rest.

She decided maybe it was in the order they delived them to her.

She started to call it.

And then… chickened out and had Madison do it!

Nothing. Wrong number.

Hmmmm.

Again, she rearranged the numbers and started to call again.

Luby did the honors this time, when she again chickened out. :)

(Notice the servers gathering behind to watch)

This time….

one of her packages on the table started RINGING!!!!

(Notice how excited Madison is in the pictures!)

I think she was pretty excited!

(Little sister is a wee bit jealous!)

Ok… confession:

Shannon and I cooked up this little game and got the servers in on it to surprise Beebo with her very own cell phone!

Then home for CAKE!

All in all, I think Beebo would tell you she had a GREAT birthday!

(Special thanks to Shannon for all the fabulous photos she took all night… all WEEK actually!)

It was such a fun surprise and I am so glad we were able to be a part of Beebo’s special day! :)

Oh and btw………..my vote was for NOT telling them it was her birthday at the mexican restaurant. Just for the record.

Beebo looks a lot like you! Just wanted to let you know I’m going to try to start blogging again. I’m a wee bit rusty, but trying to get the gears moving. Thanks for hunting me down on Facebook :-)

I would have voted TO tell also…lol In case you are taking a poll.

I love the Uno card idea. I am going to have to get Shannon to help me with surprises in the future. She is so creative.

Leave it to you two to come up with such a great way to surprise Miss Beebo :-D
I buried Sam’s in his bed after he left for school & left the usual lost of chores posted, including “Clean your room”- when he got home, I started calling the phone every 5 minutes until he found it…75 minutes later :-P

@ Meg – 75 minutes later? Holy Moly!!!!! I didn’t think anyone’s room could be worse than my kids….lol

@Dory – Forgot to say how much I loved the “Creative” title of today’s post.

@Stacy – Yeah, throwing me a bone huh? I noticed how you automatically assumed the creativeness of the Uno cards stemmed directly from Shannon. :P

I hope you have unlimited minutes…… That was the best idea for a birthday. Love Madison’s surprised look. Wish we could have seen the look on Beebo’s face too. Did she have any idea she was getting a phone?
    Happy Belated Birthday Beebo!!!

  14. Doryon 13 Jul 2009 at 9:16 pm 14

@ giggles – Better than unlimited minutes – unlimited TEXTING!! :P

Beebo was so shocked, her look was disbelief for the longest time, until that big sweet smile as she answered it, looking at me. She had been asking and asking for one. I had maintained the pretense that she wouldn’t be getting one until 16 all along – so she was definitely surprised. She hoped for it, no doubt… but didn’t really expect it. I’m tickled I was able to surprise her!

THAT WAS SOOOO FUN!!!! Though i do feel bad grilling that waitor because it turns out he really didn’t know:) oops! I was soooo happy for beebo and myself because now i can text her every day!!!! :)
