Weighty issues

I never quite understood the purpose of a paper weight. Maybe someone can explain it to me…

I mean, seriously (Anndawg – that was for you!) – if you have a stack of papers on your desk – why do they need to be weighted down? Maybe back in the day before air conditioning when people opened their windows more often then nowadays, the paper weight held a real place on the desk. Could that be it?

**Sidenote: I had to google it. I just couldn’t help myself… and I’m pleased to report – I was actually RIGHT about the purpose behind paper weights! That almost never happens so I had to mention it!**

Regardless, I find myself with a rather unusual object in my possession that I’ve always thought of as a paper weight, although – it’s really NOT very heavy. Sunday I was organizing some things in the den so that I can get busy working on some jewelry orders that I have been very neglectful in finishing this week when I noticed it sitting on a shelf. It’s funny – it’s been sitting there for quite a while and I’ve dusted it a million times over the years. I don’t even know HOW I ended up with this little treasure but it’s been in my possession for a very long time. Hopefully my mom or my sisters won’t read this and try to claim it! lol

Because, to the best of my recollection – it was my Dad’s.

Sunday when my eyes landed upon it, it was like I was seeing it for the first time. Actually, I suppose it was the first time I have seen it since my Dad died last month. I stood on the chair to get it down and as I read each saying on it, my eyes were flooding with tears.

When I posted about painting the den several months ago, it was in the picture:

But, of course, it’s hard to see up on that shelf, beside the mask that Beebo made in art class last year. Let’s look closer:

It’s a funny little object, full of sayings on each flat surface. I can remember it sitting on my Dad’s big old desk when I was a kid. When you shake it around, it rattles – like it is full of little beads. I used to play with it when I was little, like rolling a dice – to see which saying would land straight up. Sort of like turning over a Magic 8 Ball toy and reading the message.

It makes me sad to think that I have no idea where he got it, why he kept it, what it meant to him or if he ever noticed when it mysteriously disappeared. (Because, somehow, it came to live at my house!) I’d never really thought about it previously but…. now I wonder. I’ll have to remember to ask my mom.

It certainly falls into the *priceless treasure* category – but don’t worry. I have plenty of others to post for the Name that Priceless Treasure contest this week! (By the way, be sure to send your pictures today – there is no limit! You may submit more than one if you’d like!)

Now, get out there and have a great day!

I truly believe that God allows us to find those little treasures from our loved ones who have died as a little gift to us. It seems that on the days when I miss my mom the most, I come across something of hers that makes me smile- and usually cry.

I too love the little treasures that are left behind. I often come across them and smile, then cry and then remember something special that I may have forgotten.

I am torn between a few things, but I will get the pics sent this afternoon.

I love how we don’t think anything of little objects in our possession until something in our lives alters our perspective and then it becomes priceless :) I am glad you have found one of these items.
